Herbs and their extracts, including essential oils, have been used as natural treatments for a range of ailments for centuries. The use of essential oils such as oregano, to help manage intestinal health in livestock, is gaining momentum. Intestinal stress such as enteritis or coccidiosis can upset the balance of intestinal microbiota and adversly impact animal production. In a world of increasing scrutiny of antibiotic use and demands on the farmer, anything that can be done to help restore intestinal microbiota balance naturally, needs to be considered.
