Growth and consolidation: the changing face of an Australasian diary industry

A Trans-Tasman dairy behemoth is just one possible result of current manoeuvres by Australasian dairy interests to secure a stronger foothold in Asia and match the scale and reach of global competitors. Wayne Whiting, our Australasian correspondent,reports. The Australasian dairy industry is in a state of flux. Changes are resulting from a new set of guiding principles built upon issues like globalisation, economies of scale, deregulation and market determinism. The outcomes have the potential forwide-ranging repercussions, particularly when one realises the motivation towards a "Down-Under" dairy-trading bloc, and the realm of influence this bloc could occupy as the single largest international dairy marketer. Such an aggregation would accountfor 1.3 million tonnes more than the entire dairy export volume of the European Union (EU). Moreover, the Australasian industry is strategically located on Asia's doorstep, which in turn is recognised as a region experiencing continuing growth in dairy demand while facing the constraint of low domestic milk production. With the spatial reach of an Australasian dairy industry, change could ripple out to Asian and other markets. But such change will not necessarily be based on traditional trading of products. This article will analyse the transition process, highlighting plausible impacts in Asian and global theatres.
