During the month of April 2007, two most distinguished physicians died. They were both acknowledged as individuals of great medical stature intimately involved in the incredible scientific advances that have taken place in the field of cardiovascular medicine in the last half of the 20th century. One was a cardiologist who devoted his life to the improvement of the diagnosis and medical treatment of heart disease, and the other was an early cardiac surgeon who contributed significantly to the emergence of artificial organ equipment permitting open-heart surgery to become an established successful form of invasive management for cardiac disease.
