摘要

The Vienna International Workshop on Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) has developed into a well-established triennial September event in the multidisciplinary FES community. For the ninth time, biomedical engineers, clinicians, therapists, physiologists, and material and computer scientists from all over the world meet in the beautiful area of Vienna, Austria to discuss most recent developments and advances in their joint field of interest. This time, the location is Krems, a beautiful little historic village situated near Vienna at the Danube River surrounded by an outstanding wine-growing area. The scientific program covers an intensive 3 days of oral presentations and discussions, with consequent avoidance of parallel sessions and introduction of the main topics by keynote lectures. This format of the conference has become a proven tradition as also the highly appreciated support by Artificial Organs. The publication of the conference abstracts in the current issue and a special issue on FES with competitively selected articles based on conference presentations upgrades the output of the workshop and helps to make most recent work available to interested readers in an attractive and concentrated form.
