Dr. Willem Johan Kolff was born in the early morning of February 14, 1911 in Leiden, Holland, as the first son of a medical doctor, and passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 in a Philadelphia, PA, USA care center only three days short of his 98th birthday. We have lost the last of three pioneers of the artificial heart. They were Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, who passed away on Friday, July 11, 2008, two months short of his centennial birthday, and Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz, who passed away on Friday, Noverhber 14, 2008 at the age of 90.
