The first decade of the new millennium has just ended with an eventful year for public health. 2009 will go down in public health history as the year of action (actually inaction) on the issue of environmental change. The public health effects of global warming have been well researched and include increases in infectious disease and decreases in food production. It is estimated that for every 1° Celsius rise in temperature there will likely be a 4% decline in food production. At the 2009 APACPH Conference the possibility was discussed that rising temperatures may increase the rate of low-weight births and also increase noncommunicable disease rates.
