Being a raw material intensive sector,the fortunes of the paint industry aredirectly linked to the raw material situation, availability and prices. The Indian paint industry has been witnessing severe pressure due to the firming-up of raw material prices. On average, raw materials constitute 56-60% of the total expenditure made by paint companies.Sharp increases in raw material prices have posed significant challenges throughout the past year for the industry. The gradual recovery of the global economy, which led to a revival of demand, coupled with the rise in crude prices and shortage of key raw materials has meant a steady increase in prices across all categories of raw materials. Factors such as power shortages and increase in labour and transportation costs have also contributed to the total cost of production. The ever-increasing prices of crude and other materials such as monomers, have substantially eroded the bottom line of the paint companies.
