Atlantia Offshore of Houston, Texas has designed a new steel catenary riser (SCR)-friendly semisubmersible floating production unit (FPU), reputedly the first ultra-deepwater structure specifically developed to cope with forces acting on large-diameter steel catenary risers. Based on analysis of SCR motions and stresses that defined critical areas adversely affected by extreme movement, Atlantia then undertook a deep-draft hull design, drawing upon the expertise of SBM Offshore Group sister company GustoMSC-OceanDesign, an experienced designer of marine drilling rigs.
