In addition to the ongoing rollout of jackups, semi-submersibles, drillships and floating production units, many shipyards in Asia are today constructing specialised craft ranging from derrick/ pipelay/crane barges to various types of marine support vessels. John Mueller summarises the latest sector developments. Although the bulk of revenue for shipyards still stems from the fabrication of drilling rigs and floating production units, support vessel orders have built up, met primarily by smaller yards across the region, from Singapore, India and Indonesia and especially in China, where facilities continue to open and change hands at a rapid pace.
