South Korea is preparing to start exploratory drilling for gas hydrates off its east coast in the 2Q, part of a 10-year plan to achieve commercial methane production, an eagerly anticipated alternative to alleviate LNG dependency.This drilling campaign, estimated to cost $37 million and ultilising a Fugro Synergy vessel, was preceded by first exploratory drilling for gas hydrates in 2007, both efforts targeting an area south of Ulleung Island.
