The Asean Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) took effect in January 2003. While it was seen as a lifting of barriers to intra-Asean trade, it appears to have emerged as an opportunity to modernise and grow the industry on individual turfs, more so with the bird flu that has led to increased protectionism.
