Selective Air Classification of Submicron Particles in Centrifugal Rejector Wheel Classifiers

Air classification was studied in centrifugal rejector wheel classifiers specially developed for classifying submicron particles. The aim of the study was the structural design of a classifier for highly selective classification in the particle size range below 1 mu m, ensuring a low percentage of misplaced particles. A laser diffraction spectrometer and an X-ray sedimentation centrifuge were used for particle size analysis. Basic preconditions for efficient classification in the submicron range such as high circumferential speeds of the rotor to increase the radial velocity component of the particles (settling velocity) in the centrifugal field or a favourable cut-point curve in the direction of flow were realized. An existing air classifier design of the Institute for Mechanical Process Engineering and Environmental Process Engineering of the TU Clausthal was taken as a basis and gradually modified.
