The Japanese Yew, Taxus cuspidata, featured in this styling sequence was imported from the island of Hokkaido, Japan. This is wonderful raw material to work with as an artist but also it is very good material for more advanced hobbyists to learn from.It is one of several Japanese Yews that I bought for my nursery in 2004 for my "One to One" and "Extended" workshops. I am trying to educate and encourage my clients and workshop participants into taking a softer, slower approach when styling material,and so in addition to the One to One workshops I hold at my nuis-ery, I have introduced extended work- shops or seminars where clients can work with me styling more advanced material such as this Taxus cuspidata over several sessions. The benefits are that the tree can be worked at its pace and not rushed; we have time to discuss in depth aspects of horticulture and aesthetics pertaining to the tree; and we have lots of time to record all of the work so that the client has a lasting record for future reference.
