摘要

This year (2007) an exhibition incelebration of one hundred yearsof bonsai in Germany was held atthe orangery (greenhouse) of thePillnitz Castle near Dresden, oncethe summer residence of the Electoral Princes of Saxony. In 1907 an international horticultural exhibition was held in Dresden where among others "dwarf trees of the Japanese"were shown in a Japanese gardenin the centre of which a tea housewas built. Bonsai were arrangedaround the outdoor space. But atthat time, garden architecture received most of the public's attention and bonsai were regarded as"accessories" even though the styling of the garden was much less"exotic" or "droll" than the bonsaiat the world exhibitions in Paris in1876 and in 1900. In addition, ignorance regarding bonsai cultivationcontributed to the more negativeattitude towards the art. The unusual growth and styles of bonsaiwere thought to be the result of insufficient fertilizing and watering. Therefore bonsai fell into oblivionafter the exhibition in 1907 despitea general trend for Japanese gardening, architecture and art. Nevertheless there were a few reportsabout "Japanese trees" and privatecollections in European literature.
