Once upon a time bonsai was a secretive, disciplined craft based upon Japanese guidelines and aesthetics. Some practitioners even claimed to have a bag of secrets. Traits were attributed to certain trees which could only be used in prescribed styles,and discussions as to the characteristics of each style, and proper terminology. This continues today by those who require structure to learn a complex art, craft and hobby. The appearance of a book by Yee-Sun Wu may have eased our fears regarding training trees in pots and started a trend towards growing our own native species.
