This paper illustrates that any discussion of the energy requirement for milk bottling must examine not just the material from which the bottle is made but also the returnable or non‐returnable nature of the delivery system. Furthermore, for a returnable system, the energy needed to deliver a pint of milk is very sensitive to the trippage and comparison of returnable and non‐returnable delivery systems leads to an energy criterion for deciding which system is the most efficient in specific circumstances.The paper also includes a brief discussion of some future developments which could influence the type of delivery system u
