The discoverers of the rich Braidwood-Araluen Goldfields are not truly identified in most respects. The Rev. W.B. Clarke, who had received a gratuity from the Government for his efforts in finding gold-bearing locations, visited the area and regarded it as a likely goldfield. Hargraves, the so called 'discoverer of gold in Australia,' paid a visit but because there was no one like the Tom brothers to con, had a rather poor opinion of the area. Had he but known it, he could have made a quid or two here also. Perhaps the credit belongs to two unidentified men, one whom was said to have had a vision while sleeping.
