Oilseed poppy (Papaver somniferum) crops in Tasmania were surveyed for beet western yellows virus, tomato spotted wilt virus, and for potyviruses and carlaviruses. Twenty-seven crops encompassing all areas of poppy production were systematically sampled over two years and none of these viruses were detected. However, before this survey, a potyvirus was detected in a single plant in the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania. Infection was confirmed by serological testing and electron microscopy..
