I can only concur with Professor Carter's clear re-iteration of the importance of a good understanding of the constitutive models that we all use in geotechnical analyses and the development of ground engineering designs. In this he very much echoes the point made so often by Professor Ted Davis that proper constitutive models are required for valid analyses. There was one facet of Professor Carter's lecture that caused me some worry. I, for one, was left with the feeling that our currently available models are substantially inadequate. I have mulled over this matter and think that, from the viewpoint of day to day engineering design and forensic analysis, it is not generally true. I think we are nowadays pretty well off in most facets of our work. Most of our mistakes lie with inadequate engineering geology and not with inadequate constitutive models. I reached this conclusion by listing the main areas of geotechnical design and setting, against these, a rating of "usefulness" of the major constitutive models. These models range from linear elasticity, through limit equilibrium (which I loosely include with jointed plasticity), to the complex jointed models incorporated for example in UDEC and PHASES. The tables I produced are given below.
