The interactive performance of a slab on moisture reactive soil is conveniently described as a function of soil surface movement, as illustrated in Figure 1. If one assumes soil is a linearly elastic material, the performance graphs are straight lines within a calculable range of surface movement. This is true regardless of whether the slab behaves in a linearly elastic manner or not. The end points of the straight-line portions of performance graphs are at surface movements where the soil just starts to separate from the slab. The shape of performance graphs outside the straight-line portions depends upon what further assumptions are made about the structural behaviour of the slab. References 1 and 2 present the interactive performance model for a linearly elastic beam on moisture reactive soil. Reference 3 extends the beam model to the ultimate bending moment limit state. This presentation introduces the ultimate bending moment limit state model for a rectangular slab on reactive soil. All models assume soil is linearly elastic.
