The Hunter Economic Zone (HEZ) is a site of approximately 900 Ha in area, which has been zoned for industrial use and is located south of the villages of Pelaw Main, Kurri Kurri and Weston within the Cessnock Local Government Area. The HEZ will offer large industrial lots serviced by a spine road and internal road system with a potential rail link from the north. The site falls within the recently proclaimed Tomalpin Mine Subsidence District. The HEZ was extensively undermined by coal extraction in the Greta and Homeville Seams, with depths of cover to the multiple underground workings ranging from less than 10 m in the north to over 200 m in the south of the site. Three coal seams were mined during first workings and in some cases secondary workings were also made. As a result of the extensive and often shallow mine workings, there is a high risk of mine subsidence impacts across some areas near the northern end of the site. Pothole type subsidence is of particular concern. The risk of pothole subsidence progressively decreases to the south as depth of cover increases resulting in the southern areas having a very low risk of subsidence. The paper details the process of determining the location, nature and extent of old mine workings through review of historical records, drilling investigations and assessment of mine workings stability using current techniques with the ultimate purpose being the production of a subsidence constraints map for the HEZ site. The paper also provides estimates of ground subsidence for selected locations including areas of multiple worked seams.
