摘要

The First International Young Geotechnical Engineer's Conference was held in Southampton, England, from the 9~(th) to 13~(th) of September 2000. The concept of conferences specifically for young geotechnical engineers started in the UK in 1981 ("young" being defined as less than 35 years old). Since then the idea has spread, and there are now regional conferences in Europe, Australia/New Zealand, southern Africa, Asia and South America on a regular basis. The most recent conference in Australia was in Perth in February 2000, and the next conference is planned for Rotorua in March 2002 I attended the ANZ conference in Perth last year, and was fortunate enough to receive the inaugural Don Douglas Youth Award, which carried with it an invitation to attend the international conference in Southampton. The Southampton conference was organised such that the geotechnical engineering societies in each country could send two representatives. The representatives from Australia were myself and Phil Watson, and the representatives from New Zealand were Paul Horrey and Tony Fairclough.
