At one stage during a lengthy, recent interview with Australia's Mining Monthly, Coates Hire chief executive Malcolm Jackman describes his role as "chief spruiker" for the company. He also says the most significant event in the recent transformation of Coates was done before he even joined the company. There's no sense of false modesty about either statement. He means it and he believes it. And on the evidence of the past three years, Jackman is almost invariably right. Jackman also describes himself as a sprog (military slang for a new recruit) in the hire industry. Before he was appointed successor in February 2003 to the legendary Jim Brown as the head of Australia's biggest equipment hire company, he had no history in the industry.
