From traditional radio systems to high-tech satellites, the growth of the mining industry has generated increased demand for communication technologies. Meanwhile, issues of safety, reliability and cost are also driving communication trends. As new technologies take miners into new territory, it is becoming increasingly important for operators to ensure communication at all times and to all areas of the site, not only to maintain safety but also to assist productivity. Mine Site Technologies business development manager Denis Kent explained the upside of quality minesite communication. "Our mining customers want to better manage and utilise their various assets underground, be they people or, in particular, the equipment," he said. "They've invested a lot for their big machines and they want to be able to manage their machines a lot better. "If you can raise that utilisation from 75 percent to 81 percent just through better communications and allocation of resources because you've got that information available, then all that goes to the bottom line." Dependable communication systems are fast becoming the ticket to increased efficiency and output.
