THE NEED to compile nationally consistent data and information to assist in reporting on the extent and condition of Australia's natural resources has been recognised for some time. Resource managers need access to reliable, consistent information ifthey are to achieve sustainable land management and improve their ability to manage biodiversity and other environmental values. The National Land & Water Resources Audit (the Audit) was established in 1997 to work with states and territories, and the Australian Government to provide data, information and nationwide assessments of Australia's land, water and biological resources.
