摘要

THE EERIE, wailing call of the Bush Stone-curlew (Burhinus grallarius) echoing through the night has long been associated with the farming landscape of south-east Australia. This iconic Australian bird, held in high esteem by the rural community and featured in Aboriginal culture, is more often heard than seen due to its ability to freeze and blend in seamlessly with its surroundings. Bush Stone-curlews are becoming increasingly rare in NSW, Victoria and South Australia. While many farmers remember in their youth hearing the birds calling from a patch of bush on the property, the call is heard less and less often.
