WE HAVE come a long way since the first Landcare group set up at Winjallok in Victoria in 1986 to blend soil conservation and productive farming. But is "landcare" losing its identity 20 years on in the modern world of natural resource management? Thelandcare ethic has remained very much alive and well in the hearts of Australians but the understanding of what landcare means today varies broadly. There is confusion about what "landcare" is in terms of whether it is a movement or a government program or a tree growing organisation or volunteer groups doing work for public good. It is actually a combination of all of these and more.
