IN THE EARLY 1990's, NSW's Central West was hit hard with a long decade of drought. The region's economic mainstay, grazing, suffered badly as the rains held off for the first decade of the new millennium. However, the mineral deposits of the Cobar region's Lachlan Fold Belt did not dry out. And it just so happened that when the rains returned, around 2007, minerals exploration flourished. The Cobar region sports a triumvirate of heavy hitters. CBH, owned by Japanese metals house Toho Zinc, is working the Endeavour zinc-lead-silver mine, which has been in operation since 1983.
