The tough part about maintaining the water quality necessary to raise delicate species is doing it while feeding the fish at levels necessary to produce a crop in an economic time frame. It is not that difficult to maintain water quality while not feeding or feeding at <0.5% of body weight. It is entirely different trying to maintain water quality while feeding at 3% of body weight in a system stocked at >50kg of stock/m3 of culture water. There are two basic types of biological filters utilised in aquaculture, fish holding systems and waste water remediation.
