Aquaponics, with food security and water conservation in mind, has been mooted as the future of food production. Aquaculture and hydroponics both use water as the base of their production. One however wants to shed nutrients from its water, while theother feeds on nutrients in its water. It sounds like an ideal marriage doesn't it? So why hasn't it taken off? Dr. Wilson Lennard and Stephen Mushin have their own theories. Wilson has been working with aquaponics since 1992 when he did a PhD on the subject at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Stephen has been working on aquaponics systems for the last five years as an industrial designer and Green Technology Manager at CERES (Centre for Education & Research and Environmental Strategies in Brunswick, Melbourne)
