The Cowell Area School has been offering aquaculture training for students since the early 1990s. In that time over 150 students have completed training in aquaculture and related subjects, many of whom are still working on the Eyre Peninsula. Cowellis situated on the eastern side of Eyre Peninsula, around six hours drive north-west of Adelaide (and two hours' drive north of Port Lincoln, the centre of SAs thriving aquaculture industry). There are ten oyster farmers in nearby Franklin Harbour. Servicing a district of 3,283 square kilometres with less than 2,000 people, the Cowell Area School (CAS) has had to be both innovative and committed to providing authentic learning experiences, especially with VET (vocational education training).
