IT SOUNDS like the alternative farmer's dream come true, a food crop that's eaten by probably a million Australians, but not a mouthful is grown in this country. The food is bamboo shoots, a staple in the diet of more than a billion Asians, give or take a few hundred million. And with the upsurge in Asian migration, plus the burgeoning growth of new Asian restaurants across Australia, the succulents shoots, steeped in ginger sauce and served with steamed vegetables, are delighting more and more diners in this country.
