Mawis is a Volunteer Guide, Botanic Gardens Trust, Sydney and a member of Friends of the Gardens Inc. How many countries or continents can claim to know exactly where their agriculture began? Sydney, Australia, is unique because land just south of Farm Cove was selected by Governor Arthur Phillip as the site of the first farm within days of the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in January 1788. Governor Phillip proclaimed a large area east of Cattle Point (Bennelong Point, site of the SydneyOpera House) to be the first farm mainly for cereal crops and officially designated as the Governor's Domain. A small creek now known as Botanic Gardens Creek influenced the choice of a nearby site as the first farm. Although largely unsuccessful in theintended purpose of providing fresh food for the fledgling colony, the site continued as the Governor's garden.
