Paul is the Collections, Planning and Development Manager and Registrar of the Australian Cultivar Registration Authority. It is 40 years since the Australian National Botanic Gardens officially opened its gates to the public. What started out as thegreatest experiment in the cultivation of Australian plants has turned into a rich collection representing Australia's unique flora. From the beginning, staff have been developing methods for growing plants from all over Australia which would not only survive in Canberra, but flourish in its clay soils and cold winters. This article outlines some facts and figures about the Australian National Botanic Gardens' plant collection. It also highlights some of the knowledge which has been gained from ongoingexperimentation and how this has been used to further the horticultural development of Australian plants.
