My garden is in northwest England, about five miles from the Irish Sea and about a mile inland from an estuary. Rainfall is 24-28 inches (600-700mm) p.a. distributed fairly evenly. During three months of the year evaporation exceeds precipitation. Extremes are rare but occasionally we get a reminder that Britain's hinterland is Siberia. Desiccating cold dry winds coupled with frozen soil result in plants being unable to replace water lost from their leaves and death results. The absence of long periods of snow cover, coupled with alternating temperatures, produces conditions favourable to plants from upland Tasmania and similar areas on mainland Australia. Most British gardens have a preponderance of forbs and are well manicured. Mine is mostly woody plants, planted informally in a formal layout. A few plants have been brought back from Australian nurseries but most are seed raised. The overall effect is a blending of shades and textures of green, punctuated by spots of colour, from plants in bloom. I like to think that it blends Australian plants into a European garden, valuing some of them for the new textures they introduce.
