摘要

Paul is the Collections Planning and Development Manager for the Australian National Botanic Gardens and the Registrar of the Australian Cultivar Registration Authority. Sturt's Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa) grows in the hot, sandy areas of Australia. It is an annual which can produce outstanding floral displays over extended periods. Although much admired, the Sturt's Desert Pea can be difficult to grow outside its natural desert environment because it is prone to root rotting fungal diseases and pest attack. In cultivation it has been suggested that plants survive longer if they remain disease and pest free. ANBG staff have carried out extensive research and experimentation on Sturt's Desert Peas to examine their survival in cultivation and prepare them for a potted spring display. Seed-grown plants grafted onto the more vigorous and rot resistant New Zealand plant, Clianthus puniceus (Glory Pea) were used for the experiment.
