The Mount Arapiles-Tooan State Park is situated in Western Victoria, 35km west of Horsham. The Park consists of two areas. The Mount Arapiles block contains 1,500 hectares and the Tooan block 3,550 hectares. Mount Arapiles is sedimentary rock of hardquartzose sandstone composed almost entirely of silica and was laid down in the Devonian Age 400 million years ago. When approached from Horsham it appears as a mountain rising up from the flat surrounding plain. It has been described as "a beached whale on an ancient shore".
