摘要

In recent years across Southern Australia, wildfires have had a devastating impact on many humans. At the western end of Kangaroo Island, in these almost unpopulated, conserved areas, the 2007 wildfires directly impacted on relatively few people. Theimpact of the fires on this wilderness was not all negative. Post burn regeneration provided an exciting adventure for some who had the opportunity to observe dynamic changes as the vegetation re-established. The authors were two of those privileged observers. A drive from the National Park Headquarters at Rocky River to the coast at West Bay intersects many ecological niches that result from changes in soils, aspect and hydrology. Similar niches can be observed supporting similar plant associations across the island. However, a keen observer will also notice different species, and different vegetation structure, even in similar niches. In any one niche the presence or absence of seedlings, re-growth and youthful, mature or senescent plants alters theappearance, structure and diversity of its vegetation association.
