What price a gum tree? For me, quite a lot. It all started 50 years ago in the mid-northern S.A. town of Peterborough. I had a wife, two young kids (and counting!) and was rather tenuously employed as a slaughterman-boner in the local meatworks. We bought a broken-down house on seven barren acres of dry grass and we decided to plant some trees on it. This was the time of the English Disease when anything Australian was removed and replaced with good British stuff. Peterborough, (annual rainfall average 1954 to1973 was 328 mm) is not kind on these plants. When in Adelaide and on a whim, I pulled out some gumtree seedlings from a mud patch in the hills and planted one in Peterborough. To my surprise it grew (it was E. camaldulensis). After some discussion with an Orrorroo farmer, Des 'Chook' Foulis, I purchased some strange seeds from a supplier in W.A. These included E. dundasii, E, brockwayi, E woodwardii x torquata, E. kondininensis and E. salubris amongst others.
