Gary and Bev have been members of the Wimmera Growers of Australian Plants for 25 years. In 2010 Gary was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Rural City Council of Horsham for his work and commitment to Landcare Groups, Biolinks and improvement to theWimmera River and Wetlands. Our garden, in Horsham, is downstream from the weir on the Wimmera River and adjoining the wetlands. The wetlands, originally a grazing paddock, were developed 11 years ago. They are made up of a series of dams to capture stormwater from urban streets and in doing so the water travels from one dam to another through planted reed beds and other aquatic plants until it reaches the Wimmera River, free of any urban contamination. There are several islands incorporated throughoutthe wetlands, which make very secure habitat for birds, especially at nesting time. This project has proved to be very successful judging by the increase in bird species and also increased numbers of walkers and cyclists who enjoy daily the many tracks and surrounding areas. These wetlands, in conjunction with the Wimmera River, are cared for by a group of local enthusiastic volunteers who have worked hard in making it what it is today from a grazing paddock 11 years ago.
