摘要

The Wimmera region contains many flora reserves but only one purposely designed botanic display garden, the Wail Arboretum, which highlights the environmental or horticultural merits of our native flora. The Arboretum is located between Horsham and Dimboola but within the Horsham Rural City Council. It surrounds the Wail Nursery and borders on to the Wail State Forest, covering an area of 10ha. In the mid 1940s, little was known about dry area planting and because the natural vegetation in this areahad been declining for many reasons since the turn of the century, the then Forestry Commission of Victoria established a nursery at Wail in 1946. The Arboretum was developed shortly after the commencement of the Nursery as a place for people to come and view matured plant specimens.
