A common misconception amongst many tourists and interstate settlers to the Gold Coast region is that it is a place of swaying palms and lush tropical vegetation. This perception was, and still is, largely perpetrated by developers, who along with landscapers, have all but decimated the natural vegetation of the city and suburban areas of the coastal strip during the period of very rapid growth in the last 40 years. Whilst there are still some areas of rainforest on the hinterland behind the coastalstrip, the natural vegetation of this area (around 28° latitude and 153.5° longitude) was in reality predominantly Eucalypt forest and Wallum (coastal heath), with some areas of littoral rainforest.
