摘要

Plants have been developed for food and ornamental purposes for thousands of years. With the surge of interest in the Australian flora which occurred in the 1950s and 60s, enthusiasts and nurseries began selecting forms of plants with attractive or unusual characteristics. A uniform registration system was needed to record the origin, names and to identify the differences between these selections. When the Society for Growing Australian Plants (SGAP) was formed in the late 1950s, submissions were made to the Royal Horticultural Society in England, requesting it be recognised as a national cultivar registration body. In February 1962, acting on a request from the International Commission for the Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), SGAP, in conjunction with Royal Botanic Gardens and National Herbarium of Victoria, created the Australian Cultivar Registration Authority (ACRA) for registering cultivars of Australian native plants other than those of the genera Acacia and Leptospermum.
