摘要

Situated at Highfields near Toowoomba, this new 4.7 hectare botanic garden was originally part of a dairy farm, overtaken by expanding suburbs. It is now owned and managed by the Toowoomba Regional Council. The site, on red basalt soil, commands wonderful views across the Darling Downs to the Bunya Mountains in the distance, as shown above. The aim is to create a botanic garden specialising in the endemic plants of the Darling Downs, with an emphasis on showcasing local natives suitable for garden use. Toowoomba's gardening tradition is based firmly on the use of introduced plants and there has been little appreciation of the district's original vegetation. Toowoomba's ongoing, mining-driven population explosion, with its accompanying building boom, is seeing a flurry of garden-making. Peacehaven hopes to draw attention to the overlooked virtues of our own flora for use in this process.
