The Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG), established in 1816, is the oldest scientific institution in Australia. From its earliest days, the RBG scientifically evaluated and sent Australian plants to institutions around the world as living plants, seeds or herbarium specimens. In many cases, this process involved the collection and storage of seeds or other propagation material and the discovery of how best to grow, and, in the case of seeds, to store plant material for future use.
