John is a plant scientist who has worked in eucalyptus forestry for many years. He now runs his own business in the UK, which includes breeding Eucalyptus hybrids for hardy ornamental nursery stock, cut foliage and forestry. He has visited Australia many times, and is fascinated by its flora.Anyone who is familiar with some of the more ornamental eucalyptus species from the south-west of Western Australia (WA) will wish they had at least a couple in their garden. The varying combinations of shrubby habit, interesting foliage, extraordinary flower buds and large red or yellow flowers almost inevitably appeal in some way. Add to this the attractiveness of the nectar-rich flowers to wildlife and there would seem to be a whole set of species with attractive features. If only.... There is, of course, a reason why they are unfamiliar in cultivation outside parts of Australia and a few other locations - they are adapted to a Mediterranean-type climate but have very little tolerance of the frosts that are characteristic of most such locations.
