The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan is a fascinating work in progress. The 1984 proposal by Premier Neville Wran to the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust (Trust) to find a site for an Australian plant botanic garden, as a bicentenary project, has proved visionary. The site's undulating landscape and low rainfall (half that of Sydney) were the deciding factors in choosing the ex-dairy farm site. Existing, ecologically significant remnants of Cumberland Plain Woodland, of which less than 7% remains in Western Sydney, have been a bonus. Today, the Garden's total area is 416.6 hectares.
