摘要

HE LUCKY FEW who witnessed one of the world's first hang-glider flights - at the 1963 Jacaranda Festival in Grafton, NSW — went home mostly disappointed. "Everybody came to see a crash," says John Dickenson, inventor of the craft on show that day. "They didn't realise they were witnessing the first public demonstration of a piece of aviation history that belongs to us." Before 1963, the closest thing to a hang-glider was the Rogallo wing, a flexible wing built in the USA by Francis and Gertrude Rogallo. The Rogallos' design spawned many variations throughout the 1960s and is critical to the birth of hang-gliding, but it was John's two simple innovations that became the basis for all modern hang-gliders: a single hang point with a weight-shift control, and a rigid 'A' frame. "I knew what I'd done," John says. "As soon as I knew it worked I rushed out and got a patent."
