摘要

SOME TRACE age-old Aboriginal walking and trading paths, others string together billa-bongs along remote rivers. Many other stock routes that crisscross outback Australia have been blazed in bitumen to serve as major arterial roads. Long the salve ofpastoralists dogged by poor seasons, these tracks are today opening up some of the continent's most inaccessible and stunning country to everyone from anglers and birdwatchers to campers and fossickers. Australia's lattice of travelling stock routes wasestablished throughout the mid-i8oos to funnel sheep and cattle from far-flung paddocks to market centres and better pasture. Droving stock through "the long paddock" — along roads and through reserves, unallocated State or territory land and pastoral leases — is still commonplace during the dryer, leaner, cooler months of the year.
