THE YEAR 2011 WAS A Notable one for diesel-powered light-duty vehicles in the United States. Sales were up 27 percent over the previous year, growing at a far faster rate than those of another type of alternative-power plant vehicle-hybrids-which saw just a 2 percent gain. And while total hybrid sales, 268,807 vehicles, were hindered by the tsunami that crippled Japanese manufacturing for months, industry watchers took note that diesels were picking up steam in the States.
